SCC Alums Give $100k to SCC Foundation
Southeastern Community College’s Building the Dream capital campaign has received another major gift. SCC Distinguished Alumni John and Judy (Duttweiler) Arledge, formerly of Burlington, have donated $100,000.
The Arledges are long-time supporters of SCC. In 1995, they established a scholarship for financially needy students and they each have served on the SCC Foundation Board. They currently serve as honorary co-chairs of the Building the Dream Lead Gifts division.
SCC’s President Dr. Michael Ash says including the Arledges’ gift, the College has secured funding pledges of over $8.7 million of the campaign’s $12 million goal.
The Arledges’ gift includes $70,000 for the Building the Dream Campaign and $30,000 to the John and Judy Arledge Scholarship Fund.
Dr. Ash notes the Arledges’ creative use of their pledge.
“By supporting the capital campaign and their scholarship fund, John and Judy have expanded the scope of their pledge beyond just access to modern facilities. It will also increase access to scholarship opportunities so students can further take advantage of their education. It’s a powerful one-two punch.”
The Building the Dream capital campaign supports SCC’s construction initiative of the same name. It includes the new Health Professions Center and the Hall of Sciences on the West Burlington campus, and the Industrial Technologies Training Center on the Keokuk campus. With an estimated total project cost of $27 million, it is the largest, most comprehensive infrastructure investment undertaken by SCC since 1995.
As Burlington natives, John attended SCC in 1966 and Judy in 1968. John earned a BA from Drake University and Judy completed her education at the University of Northern Iowa. They returned to work in local family businesses, with John at Arledge Trucking and Arledge Auto, and Judy at Sterzing Food Company. John later opened a financial brokerage affiliated with Berthel Fischer.
John says that SCC was an important educational step for him and Judy and that it has a special place in their hearts.
“Even though we now live in Florida, we continue to believe in the community and still call the Burlington area home. We want to help SCC make a difference and continue to meet the region’s needs,” John explains.
Judy adds, “Burlington and the region are so lucky to have SCC. We’ve seen first-hand how important a higher education is, so, adding to our SCC scholarship while helping build new facilities for future students made sense to us. It just feels good to help.”
SCC Executive Director Becky Rump says the SCC Foundation is especially happy to receive the Arledge’s gift. “Judy and John have actively guided and supported our work. They are good friends to SCC and continue to demonstrate their friendship through their many efforts and financial support.”
Campaign chair Michael Shinn echoes that excitement, “Although they serve as honorary chairs, both John and Judy have been actively involved since we first started the campaign. We are so grateful for their participation.”
