SCC Opens New Industrial Technologies Training Center on June 13

Southeastern Community College will hold a ribbon cutting and open house for its new Industrial Technologies Training Center (ITTC) on Tuesday, June 13 at 4:30 p.m. The facility is located on the Keokuk campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The center is the new home for SCC’s popular Industrial Technology program. It features state-of-the-art labs for mechanical and electrical technology training. The building also contains a welding lab, computer lab, classroom, student spaces, and a new campus maintenance garage.

SCC launched the Industrial Technology program about ten years ago thanks to a grant from the US Department of Labor to buy $1 million worth of training equipment.

“We had all this high tech training equipment and very little space to put it,” says SCC’s Keokuk Campus Coordinator Kari Bevans. “The space was functional, but it was pretty tight. The new building allows us to spread out to take better advantage of all the technology. It’s going to improve student learning.”

Bevans adds that the new facility will allow the program to enhance its offerings as area industry adds new technology that requires specialized training.

The Industrial Technology program is taught in segments with students earning credentials as they complete individual components. Student progress goes from earning certificates in mechanical or electronics technologies to a one-year diploma to a two-year specialized AAS degree. In addition to credit programs, a number of short-term, non-credit classes are offered throughout the year.

Built at a cost of $4.2 million, the facility is part of SCC’s Building the Dream campus expansion initiative, the College’s largest infrastructure investment initiative since the early 1990’s. It was funded in part by a $1 million grant from the US Economic Development Administration.
