The Baseball Program
The History of SCC Baseball

Head Coach Justin Schulte just completed his fourth season at Southeastern and his 11th overall as a head coach – where he won 41 games, setting a single-season school record. That makes 144 wins in four seasons, the most successful four-year run in school history. Those wins also bring Coach Schulte’s career total to 420 in 11 years. The 2009 Blackhawks continued the tradition of sending players to Division 1 schools (Chris Vergne - Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi), and also saw a top 10 national ranking. Our ’08 roster included six All-Region performers, the region’s defensive player of the year, the national leader in saves and a Third-Team All American. Our 2008 team had 12 players sent to the 4-year level on scholarship bringing our three-year total to 30 players either at 4-year colleges or signed professionally.
Southeastern Community College is an NJCAA Division II institution with just over 3,000 students that competes in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, Region XI. SCC has played a predominant role in Region XI over the last 14 years with such accomplishments as: a World Series appearance in 1994, No. 1 ranking in the NJCAA Division II poll twice, as well as 11 former players drafted or signed to free agent Major League contracts out of our program. SCC is the only junior college in the state of Iowa to have players drafted or signed as a free agent each of the last four years from 2005-08 (Robert Ortiz, free agent, 2008; Rafael Carlot, 50th round, 2007; Luis Fernandez 23rd round, 2006; Joel Melendez 26th round, 2005). We also take great pride here at SCC in developing players and sending them on to the 4-year level. For example, 28 players have gone on to the NCAA Division I level since 1992. In the last three years, RHP Brock Alberts went to the University of Iowa in 2006 and was their No. 1 starter in 2008; 2B Aaron Bonomi attended Winthrop University in 2007, was their starting second baseman and hit .291 in 58 games; and 2008 sophomore Rob Sorenson will be attending the University of Northern Iowa to be their No. 1 starter in 2009. More than 100 other players have signed with top NCAA Division II and top NAIA programs throughout the country. SCC has a rich tradition of producing All-Region and All-American players since 1993.
The SCC Baseball Program features one of the most competitive 56-game schedules in the state highlighted by four Southern trips (2009 – Mississippi, Saint Louis, southern Illinois and, for spring break, Myrtle Beach, SC), granting our players exposure throughout the country, not just the region, while competing on a national stage. We play our home games at the Dick Wagner Sports Complex located on campus. This facility was built eight years ago and includes baseball and softball fields, each with its own state-of-the-art press box, concession facility, and brand new lights for the 2008-09 season, making for a great college baseball atmosphere. Our fall season includes a seven-week program in which we compete against some of the top JUCO and NAIA programs in the Midwest. Our off-season schedule includes individual workouts with certified strength and conditioning coach Chris Reed along with baseball workouts at the minor league indoor facility of the Burlington Bees, Class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. This allows our players to be prepared to travel south in late February and early March.
We are committed to our students’ academic success as well. With an 18-1 student to faculty ratio, along with our Academic SuCCess Center, our student athletes have the resources needed to succeed on the field and in the classroom. SCC will provide you with the solid foundation needed to further your education at a 4-year institution.
