Meet the Coaches


Head Coach - Terry Carroll 

terry carrollCoach Terry Carroll enters his 3rd season as the Head Basketball Coach for the Blackhawks.  Carroll brings 20 years of coaching experience to the SCC Blackhawk Basketball program.  Prior to his arrival at Southeastern, Carroll spent nine season's as the head men's basketball coach at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa.  During that time he led the Warriors to an impressive 269-50 record (.842) and back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) titles in 1997 and 1998.  He was named NJCAA Coach of the Year in both 1997 and 1998, earned NJCAA District Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches following both national championship runs.  Carroll also led IHCC to a NJCAA record of 72 consecutive wins. 

After Indian Hills, Carroll began his stint at ISU as an assistant in 1998 and was named associate head coach prior to the start to the 2000 campaign.  He helped guide the Cyclones to back-to-back Big 12 Conference regular-season championships as well as back-to-back NIT Tournament appearances in 1999-00 and 2000-01.  During the 1999 season, Iowa State made a strong run in the NCAA tournament only to be beat by eventual national champion Michigan State in the Elite Eight. 

The Ames, Iowa native accepted the position at Denver after spending three seasons at Iowa State.  Terry Carroll was named the 30th head men's basketball coach at the University of Denver on April 3rd, 2001.  The 2005 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year has had five years at DU, including four consecutive winning seasons, the DU's best Division I season in school history, DU's first birth in the National Invitation Tournament in 46 years and the Pioneers' first Sun Belt Conference regular season championship. 

His coaching philosophy is simple, play hard, play smart, and play together.  When all of these things are done and done correctly, everything else will fall into place.  

 

Assistant Coach - Brian Turner 

brian turnerBrian Turner is entering into his 6th year as an assistant coach for the men's basketball program for Southeastern.  Coach Turner's main responsibility will be Scouting Coordinator, along with his other responsibilities which include guard development, recruiting, academics, dorm supervision, marketing and promotion of basketball and community events and other daily basketball operations.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Assistant Coach - Lorenzo Watkins 

lorenzo watkinsLorenzo Watkins enters his first season at SCC, after a coaching for the Bulldogs at South Carolina State University. He previously served one season as an assistant coach at Campbell University. While at Campbell, Watkins was instrumental in the development of the Fighting Campbell program. Before Campbell, Watkins spent one season as assistant coach at the University of New Orleans (UNO). During his stint at UNO, the Privateers won 14 games overall and went 9-9 in the Sun Belt Conference. Watkins had also previously spent time as an assistant at Sacramento State, where he helped lead the Hornets to their first Big Sky Tournament semifinal appearance since joining the conference in 1996.

Before moving to Division I ranks, Watkins spent four years as head coach at Indian Hills. IHCC posted a 94-36 record during Watkins four years in charge, averaging 24 wins a season. Watkins spent six years total at Indian Hills serving as assistant for two seasons.

Watkins played two years for Idaho State before earning his B.A. degree in social work in 1997. He started all 55 games in which he appeared at Idaho State and averaged 14.1 points per contest. An all-Big Sky Conference selection as a junior, Watkins led the Bengals in three-pointers made each season and ranks fifth all-time at Idaho State with 116 career treys. Watkins played two years at Indian Hills where he played for Coach Carroll from 1991-1993 and was two-time all-region selection as junior as a point guard for the Warriors. 

He earned his A.A. in arts and sciences in 1993. Watkins is a native of Portsmouth, VA and married to former Sara Noe of Eldon, Iowa. They have a son, Mason and two other boys, Landon and Trey and also a daugther Olaundria. Coach Watkins's basketball responsibilities at SCC will be to coordinate recruiting, academic monitoring and big man play. He is also the Director of Fund Raising for the Athletic Department.
