Bike Ride Nets $3K for Dan Ring SCC Nursing Scholarship

cyclists embark on the ride

The Inaugural Dan Ring Memorial Bike Ride took place last Saturday, September 26. The event raised over $3000 for the Daniel Anders Ring Memorial Endowed Nursing Scholarship. Approximately 100 cyclists participated in the event.

The ride started and ended at SCC’s West Burlington campus. Participants rode the 16-mile bike route that meanders through the Burlington area. About 30 kids and parents also enjoyed a short kiddie ride that included stops for ice cream at Maid Rite and to feed fish at the lake on the Great River Medical Center camps.

The ride began with a short dedication ceremony for a new covered bike parking facility on the north side of the SCC campus. The facility was constructed and funded by college students and staff.

Dan Ring was a long time life sciences instructor at SCC. He loved nature and was an avid cyclist, riding as many as 7000 miles every year. He died of a heart attack while riding his bike home from SCC in November of 2008. Soon after his passing, friends and colleagues agreed that a bike ride would be a perfect event to celebrate Dan’s life while raising funds to support a scholarship in his honor.

The weather started out a little drizzly and organizers were initially concerned that turnout would be low. However they also noted how appropriate it was given Dan’s commitment to cycling.

“Dan rode his bike every day of the year in all sorts of weather. It’s fitting that so many people chose to brave the drizzly morning. Besides, it turned out to be a really nice day for a bike ride,” joked organizer Kim Tracy.

Fellow organizer Brian McAtee was equally impressed with the turnout. “It was really cool to see packs of riders in their bright neon green shirts make their way through town. Dan would have been proud.”

Dan’s wife Joyce Ring was touched to see such a turn out.

“It was a wonderful event – emotional for many – but wonderful. It’s evident that Dan was loved and respected my many people from many walks of life.”

Proceeds will fund the newly-created Daniel Anders Ring Memorial Endowed Nursing Scholarship. This scholarship is intended for students in the second semester of the Summer Start or Evening & Weekend Nursing Program.

Event sponsors included Christ Episcopal Church, Standard of Beaverdale, the Hawk Eye, Bike Burlington, Bickel’s Cycling & Fitness, GRMC, Chapter’s Café & Catering, SCC Student Board, and SCC. Refreshment Services Pepsi, HY-Vee, and Maid Rite also provided donations for the event.

Additional contributions are welcome. Interested donors may contact Becky Rump at (319) 208-5065 or at brump@scciowa.edu, or mail checks to SCC Foundation, Dan Ring Memorial Scholarship, 1500 West Agency Road, West Burlington, IA 52655.
