Martha Wolf, Jerri Dean to Receive 2010 SCC Distinguished Alumnus Awards

The SCC Alumni Association recently announced Martha Wolf and Jerri Dean as the recipients of the 2010 SCC Distinguished Alumnus Awards. The awards are given annually to alumni of SCC or one of its predecessor institutions, including Burlington Junior College and Keokuk Community College, who have achieved substantial public recognition for their accomplishments or success.

One is awarded to an alumnus of the College’s Keokuk campus and one to an alumnus the West Burlington campus. Martha Wolf was selected as the recipient for the Keokuk campus, and Jerri Dean for West Burlington.

A Distinguished Alumni Award recipient must have made substantial contributions to the good of his or her fellow human beings, been recognized as an outstanding practitioner of his or her profession or vocation, or served as a motivational force for others in a positive manner.

Martha Wolf earned her Associate of Arts degree from SCC in 1969.

As co-owner of the Ivy Bake Shoppe and Café, Wolf opened the first location in downtown Fort Madison in 1995 and a second location in West Burlington in 2002. The Ivy Bake Shoppe & Café was featured in Time magazine in 2000, in the Chicago Tribune in 2003 and she published the Ivy Bake Shoppe Cookbook in 2007.

Wolf was a member of the State Advisory Board for small business for five years and served as President for two of those years. Martha received “Citizen of the Year’ in Fort Madison in 1990. She was awarded the “Woman of Distinction” award in Fort Madison in 1996. She served on the Fort Madison School Board for nine years and was President for three of those years. She is President of the Downtown Riverfront Business District and donates time and talent to many community activities. She is also very active in St. John’s United Church of Christ. 

Jerri Dean is a 1957 graduate of Burlington Hospital School of Nursing and Burlington Junior College.

Dean was in the first class to graduate from both the hospital and the college. She taught her first Nurse Aide class for SCC in 1968. She taught industrial first aid, farm safety, and substituted in the Medical Assistant and Clinical Nursing programs all while working full-time at the hospital in Mt. Pleasant. She came to work for SCC full-time as the Health Coordinator in 1980 and worked in that position for 18 years.

In her leadership role with Continuing Education at SCC she introduced new programs and initiated the use of continuing education computer classes for Nurses to keep nursing students updated in technology.

Dean was a founding member of the SCC Alumni Association in June 25, 1991 and completed six terms on the Board. She is a member of the Iowa Association of Lifelong Learning and is active in her church and numerous nursing committees and organizations. In 1988, Jerri and her husband, Dean (Vernon) established a Nursing scholarship in memory of their Nursing student daughter, Marsha, who was killed in a car accident on her way to school at SCC on January 29, 1988.
