SCC spring registration, orientations underway, classes begin january 15

West Burlington – Do your new year’s resolutions include getting a college degree or preparing for a new career?  You’re in luck. Registration is currently underway for the upcoming spring semester at Southeastern Community College.  Classes begin January 15, 2007 and there is still time to find out if college is right for you.

“There is definitely a lot of interest this time of year,” says Louise Orozco, Dean of Enrollment Services. “Right after the holidays, we get a pretty big influx of people wanting to register for classes.”

Orozco notes that January is a time when a lot of people make lifestyle changes such as deciding to go to college.  While many associate the idea of starting college with the fall semester, Orozco says those choosing to start mid-school year have some advantages.

“Most of our career programs are structured to begin in August and end in May with classes designed to be taken in order over the course of one or two years.  It works really well but some people returning to school after a number of years might find that intimidating. Students starting in January are able to take perhaps only a couple of classes which allows them to sort of ease into going to school and figure out how to balance school with work and family.”

Most of the college’s programs have space for new students and the large selection of general elective classes means there is always room for more students Orozco says.  The college also offers a wide array of classes online via the internet.

Since the majority of new students do start in the fall, those students who start in the spring can sometimes get up and running a little faster due to lighter traffic.  Services like new student orientations, college advising, and filing for financial aid are available for new students in the spring just like they are in the fall.  However Orozco warns that while Enrollment Services staff serves fewer new students in the spring, they still have to go through all the steps. “The process still takes a little time, so you can’t always sign up and head straight to class on the first day.”

Persons interested in registering for classes are encouraged to do so right away so that they can attend a new student orientation session. The college will hold new student orientations at both the Keokuk and West Burlington campuses next week.

Two orientations are schedule in West Burlington. An orientation will take place on Tuesday, January 9, at 5:30 p.m. in room 501 for those interested in pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Arts and Sciences (A.A. or A.S.).  Those interested in specific career programs should attend the orientation on Thursday, January 11, at 8:30 a.m. in room 501.

New students attending SCC’s Keokuk campus should attend an orientation on Wednesday January 10, at 9:00 a.m. in room 511.

Anyone interested in registering for classes are encouraged to stop by SCC Enrollment Services in Keokuk or West Burlington.  They may also call for an appointment toll free at 866-SCC-IOWA.

SCC’s spring semester begins January 15; online classes begin one week later, January 22.
