SCC Partners with Indian Hills to Offer More Programs

West Burlington – Southeastern Community College (SCC) and Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) have teamed up to offer a combined four more programs to a significantly larger student base.

SCC will offer respiratory care and medical assistant programs to IHCC students while IHCC will offer pharmacy technology and occupational therapy to SCC students. Students can sign up for the programs to begin taking general education courses at their home college as soon as this fall.

SCC faculty members noticed a great need to offer respiratory care and medical assistant programs in the Ottumwa area when they received several phone calls from employers asking for students to complete clinical experiences in their area.

"This gives even more potential students additional opportunities that might be a better fit for them," Respiratory Care Coordinator Stacy Lewis Sells explained. "Before this partnership, the career fields weren't options for students who want to stay in their community."

Faculty members remark that these fields are in high demand, and the clinical experiences that the programs require often lead to high-paying jobs soon after graduation --- often with a sign-on bonus.

Partnering up with IHCC will limit travel for students who join any program, even after their initial general education courses are complete. Some of the programs will allow lectures to be completed online with travel only required for labs.

"This is a good partnership," Kristi Schroeder SCC's Dean of Health Professions and Director of Nursing remarked. "It's a win-win for all."
