SCC Ag Department Hosting SCC Blackhawk Preview Show, May 9 And 10
West Burlington, IA- The Southeastern Community College (SCC) Agriculture Department will host its second annual SCC Blackhawk Preview Show at the Des Moines County Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10. The event includes an Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Association cattle show on Saturday and an Iowa Junior Swine Association hog show on Sunday. Weigh-ins for both shows begins at 8 a.m., showing starts at 9 a.m.
Lunch will be served both days to support the SCC Agriculture Club and the Mediapolis Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
SCC Agriculture Instructor, Adam Raub, says the show helps kids involved in agriculture contests earn points towards year-end placement at state and county fairs.
“There are approximately 20 shows for each species during the spring and summer,” says Raub, “So the Blackhawk preview is a great opportunity for 4-H and FFA kids to work with their cattle and hogs and get more showing experience.”
Raub adds that as a club-sponsored event, Ag students get great experience in community involvement and other valuable career skills.
“The show gives our students the opportunity to work with vendors, mentor aspiring Ag students, and hands-on exposure to careers in agriculture.”
