Carr Family Alumni Support Building the Dream
Southeastern Community College’s Building the Dream capital campaign has received another gift, this time from brothers and SCC alumni. Burlington natives Daniel Carr (SCC ‘82) of Liberty, MO, Gary Carr (‘74) of Frisco, TX and Kevin Carr (‘79) of Burlington, IA have made a combined gift to honor of their parents, Bill and Nancy Carr.
“The Carr family has a great story,” says SCC President Dr. Michael Ash.
“All eight siblings attended SCC. I’d call that real commitment to this institution. Now they’re continuing that commitment with their generous gift. The fact that they have contributed to our Building the Dream campaign shows how our alumni value the opportunities SCC has helped provide.”
From 1973 through 1983, there was at least one Carr walking the halls on the West Burlington campus. Each credits SCC as a great place to start their BA degree.
“Our parents worked hard all their lives. We each paid our way through school, but they supported us in the best possible ways. It was never a question of if we’d go to college, but when we’d go to college,” explains son Kevin.
Retired SCC Vice President John Cavanah served as college advisor for most of the Carr siblings early in his career. In an article about the Carr family for the SCC newsletter in the early 80’s, he wrote how the siblings attended SCC for one or more years, then successfully transferred to either the University of Iowa, Iowa State University or Northeast Missouri State (now Truman State University).
Kevin says SCC was a smart educational investment for him and his family.
“With eight kids in the family, this was the best option for us. We got a great education at an affordable price and we were ready for upper level classes after we transferred. In fact, all of us Carr kids ended up with at least a 4 year degree. It all started with a great counselor, John Cavanah, and a great school.”
Now one member of the family has come full circle. After a number of years in the insurance and accounting sectors, Kevin joined the SCC staff as Vice President of Administrative Services in 2014.
Building the Dream campaign chair Mike Shinn is thrilled, too. “Including the Carr family gift, SCC has secured funding commitments of over $9 million of the campaign’s $12 million goal. We still have a way to go, but this generous family has helped moved the needle.”
The Carr brothers’ gift of $25,000 came about when Kevin asked his brothers to add to his gift. They agreed and decided to name the gift in honor of their parents. The Bill and Nancy Carr Classroom will be located in the new Health Professions Center currently under construction on the West Burlington campus. Along with their parents, Dan, Gary and Kevin will be recognized on a plaque outside the classroom.
The Building the Dream capital campaign supports SCC’s construction initiative of the same name. It includes the new Health Professions Center and the Hall of Sciences on the West Burlington campus, and the Industrial Technologies Training Center on the Keokuk campus. With an estimated total project cost of $27 million, it is the largest, most comprehensive infrastructure investment undertaken by SCC since 1995.
