WW Transport Supports SCC’s Dream with $50,000 Gift in Memory of Donald M. Walters
Southeastern Community College’s Building the Dream capital campaign has received another major gift, this time $50,000 from WW Transport, in memory of Donald M. Walters.
SCC President Dr. Michael Ash expressed his sincere appreciation for such a meaningful memorial to a visionary businessman.
“For a quarter century, WW Transport has been a well-respected institution in this region. To have them make such a significant gift in memory of its president’s father has real meaning to us and our campaign.”
WW Transport president Jeff Walters was quick to offer support to the project.
“Supporting deserving organizations like SCC is just what we do,” said Walters.
Initially, Walters declined public recognition for the gift. After a conversation with SCC Foundation Board Executive Director and campaign coordinator Becky Rump and campaign volunteer John Schulz, he decided to make the gift in memory of Don Walters, his father.
Jeff explained that Don attended SCC’s predecessor institution, Burlington Junior College, and played on the football team from 1953 to 54 as a running back.
“He absolutely loved it, so this gift is a way to pay it forward so that future students can benefit and have positive experiences of their own,” said Walters.
Building the Dream Campaign Chair, Mike Shinn added, “WW Transport is a model for companies in this region. They understand the how every company plays an important part in the strength of our region, and how a strong SCC is a vital part in that equation.”
With the WW Transportation gift, the campaign has surpassed the $9.3 million mark of its $12 million goal.
The Building the Dream capital campaign supports SCC’s construction initiative of the same name. It includes the new Health Professions Center and the Hall of Sciences on the West Burlington campus, and the Industrial Technologies Training Center on the Keokuk campus. With an estimated total project cost of $27 million, it is the largest, most comprehensive infrastructure investment undertaken by SCC since 1995.
