SCC To Launch Sports Shooting Team this Fall

West Burlington, IA- Sports shooting is coming to Southeastern Community College (SCC) this fall. The team will compete against other colleges across the state including the University of Iowa.

SCC sports shooting Assistant Coach, Brain McAtee, says former SCC alumnus, John Klopfenstein, saw the growing success of sports shooting programs at other colleges and encouraged SCC to add a sports shooting team to its repertoire. “John told us about the sport’s increasing popularity in other schools across the state and we saw it as a great opportunity to get more students involved.”

The top 10 athletes on the team will travel to competitions. The team is open to all male and female, full-time SCC students.

McAtee says the main goal for this year is to build relationships with sports shooting professionals and organizations across the region. “We’ve been working a lot with high school coaches, Iowa Pheasants Forever, and Des Moines County Conservation,” says McAtee.  “There are some very experienced sports shooters right here in Southeast Iowa that we’ve been able to go to for help developing our program. They’re really going to be an asset as we move forward.”

The team will host one of the competitive shoots in the Iowa Collegiate Sports Shooting Conference this fall at its home course, Tri-State Gun Club in Montrose, Iowa.

SCC sports shooting Head Coach, Tim Weaver is confident the Blackhawks will field a competitive team. “Although it’s our first year, I think we’ll have a great team and we hope to send some of our athletes to nationals in the spring.”

The split-season runs August through November and March through May.
