The Second Annual Dirty Hawk 5K Comes to SCC on October 14
10/06/2017
Southeastern Community College (SCC) will host its second annual Dirty Hawk Dash 5K on Saturday, October 14 in West Burlington. This mud run will take racers on a 5K loop over, through and around SCC’s West Burlington campus with plenty of obstacles along the way.
“If you want to do a race like this, you’re driving a few hours to get there, and it costs a lot more,” explains race committee member Jeff Ebbing. “We’ve built a quality of event that’s available to people right here in our community.”
Last year’s event attracted approximately 200 racers. Many donned costumes, including Ninja Turtles, super heroes, zombies, and a large group of human M&Ms.
"Response has been even better than last year,” adds race coordinator Pam Peterson.
This year’s course includes even more obstacles. Racers will run through corn rows, scale multiple climbing walls, including a tower that’s nearly two stories tall, wrestle tractor trailer tire flips and a log carry, wade through mud pits, and more.
“One thing we heard last year was that racers wanted more mud, and all I can say is ‘message received,’” adds Peterson. “If you liked last year, you’ll love this year.”
The course is difficult enough to challenge serious racers but not so daunting as to scare away average person.
The event is a college-wide endeavor. Various student clubs and departments have been busy building obstacles since the spring. Many others have provided support for the event.
Race proceeds benefit student clubs and activities.
The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, with heats starting every 15 minutes. The race is open to adults and youth, and racers can also register as a team. Registrations will be accepted until race day, however late racers may not receive a shirt.
