SCC Hosts Open House for New Auto Tech Lab on Keokuk Campus Oct. 24

Southeastern Community College will host an open house for its new Automotive Technology Lab on its Keokuk campus on Tuesday, October 24 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.
Made possible in part by a $10,000 grant from the Iowa Auto Dealers Association, the lab is equipped with auto lifts, tool chests and class-related equipment.
In August, SCC began offering two automotive technology classes targeting high schools in Lee County and surrounding areas. The classes are designed to expose students to the automotive field and provide the basics of automotive repair over the course of a single semester. Each 2-credit hour class lasts eight weeks. Students take Introduction to Automotive Technology first and then Fundamentals of Automotive Servicing.
“There’s definitely a need for people to enter careers in the automotive industry locally,” says SCC Dean of Career and Technical Education Susan Dunek. “We offer similar high school classes in West Burlington, but the drive is prohibitive for Keokuk high schoolers. Offering these classes right here in Keokuk now allows them to take advantage of the opportunity.”
The same two classes will be offered again in the spring.
Students interested in earning a degree in one of SCC’s automotive programs will have to complete their studies on the West Burlington campus.
