Honors Program

The Southeastern Community College Honors Program allows highly motivated and talented students to take on elevated levels of academic freedom and responsibility as they assume more control over their college education.
The Program provides increased potential for personal growth in areas of cultural awareness, community responsibility, and transformational leadership. Members of the Honors Program enjoy opportunities to grow, discover, and become the best version of themselves.
Why join the Honors Program?
Special Honors-only classes – Hone your leadership and communication skills, then apply your learning as you
work with classmates.
Dedicated advising – Work one-on-one with a dedicated Honors Advisor.
Learning community – Spend time with fellow Honors students and develop a network of like-minded peers.
Leadership opportunities – Join the President's Leadership Academy and Phi Theta Kappa to learn leadership
skills, represent SCC at community events, and attend student conferences.
Mentoring opportunities – Share your learning and experiences with incoming new students or serve as a peer
tutor.
Special recognition on your diploma and transcript – Officially demonstrate your accomplishment to transfer colleges and potential employers.
Scholarship opportunities – Valedictorians and salutatorians can got to SCC for free.
Honors program transfer – Plan to continue to earn a bachelor's degree? Continue your honors status when
you transfer to select universities and colleges.
Program Basics
The Honors Program includes the following components:
Students must maintain a 3.5 GPA
Completion of Honors First Year Experience (SDV-108H)
Completion of four Honors courses, in addition to required coursework in the chosen
degree program
Honors coursework will fulfill 12 credits of the SCC general education course requirements from:
• Communications
• Humanities
• Social Science
• Math & Science
• Cultural Awareness
Attendance at a professional conference/event
Completion of an Honors Project
Co-Curricular Activities & Opportunities
Along with program coursework, Honors students will participate in:

- Team building event
- President's welcome dinner
- Holiday cultural event
- Meet and greet with Board of Trustees
- Spring appreciation dinner
- Graduation celebration/presentation of honors projects
- President's Leadership Academy*
- Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society*
- Student Legislative Seminar in Des Moines*

Eligibility
To be considered for the Honors Program, applicants must have:

- 3.5 High School GPA (new students)
- 3.5 Cumulative College GPA (transfer students)
- Completed SCC application and SCC Honors Program application
Note: International students should consult with the International Programs Specialist before applying.
