The TRIO – SSS program at Southeastern Community College provides holistic academic support services to students.
The TRIO – SSS program at Southeastern Community College is funded by a grant through the U.S. Department of Education and participates in a consortium agreement with Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, Illinois. Collectively we serve 250 students annually. The grant was awarded a total of $337,055 for the 2013-2014 program year. The Southeastern Community College TRIO – SSS program is funded 100% by the grant.
How do I qualify?
In order to be accepted into the SSS program you must:
- Be a United States citizen or permanent resident
- Be enrolled as a student on the SCC West Burlington campus
- Have the goal to transfer to a college or university and obtain a bachelor’s degree
- Have demonstrated academic need
Additionally, you must meet one or more of the following:
- Be a first-generation college student; this means neither of your parents have a bachelor’s degree
- Be income eligible according to federal guidelines
- Have a documented physical or learning disability

- Jump Start orientation program
- First Year Experience (FYE) sessions
- Academic advising and registration
- Financial aid assistance
- College transfer advising
- Campus visits to prospective transfer colleges
- Career exploration and planning
- Scholarship assistance
- On-site computer lab
- Student cultural activities
- Free tutoring
- Test taking and study skills help

Students are able to work with staff in a one-on-one setting and truly get to know one another on a first name basis
The program has specific, measurable outcome objectives that are outlined and identified in each approved grant proposal
- Comprehensive & cultural
Students receive assistance in completing financial aid forms and applications to colleges and universities, have access to tutoring services, and have the opportunity to attend various cultural events and programs
Students participating in the S.S.S. program have higher persistence rates and are in better academic standing than other students coming from similar backgrounds and situations who did not participate in the program. 77% of S.S.S. students persist from one year to the next. 86% are in good academic standing.
