(West Burlington, IA) - Students from Southeastern Community College’s Computer Club and Business Club earned top honors at the Iowa Business Professionals of America State Leadership Conference held this month.
Nine Computer Club students competed at the state conference, and all nine placed in their events and qualified for the BPA National Leadership Conference in May.
Students competed against two-and four-year colleges from across Iowa in events including Java Programming, Computer Security, Server Administration Using Microsoft, Business Law and Ethics, Digital Marketing, and Project Management.
Brenda Wamsley, SCC network administration and cybersecurity instructor and co-advisor of the Computer Club, praised the students’ performance.
“Our students showed incredible dedication, professionalism, and technical skill,” Wamsley said. “To have every student place at state and qualify for nationals is an outstanding accomplishment. We are proud of the way they represent SCC.”
Computer Club members earning honors include:
Rynders Mahavong, Mt. Pleasant; Thad Maxwell, Burlington; Tony Menke, New London; Alexis Muldoon, Fort Madison; Wesley Takahashi, Winfield; Kessler Towne, West Burlington; Leandro Romagnoli, Mato Grosso, Brazil; Natalyn Blakeman, West Burlington; and Steven Lively, Cleghorn.
SCC’s Business Club also saw strong success at the state competition. Both students who participated qualified for nationals.
Trisha Hopper, SCC business administration instructor and co-advisor of the Business Club, said she was proud of her students’ achievements.
“It is incredibly rewarding to watch our students challenge themselves and succeed at this level,” Hopper said. “They have worked hard to prepare, and we are excited to see them compete on the national stage.”
Business Club members earning honors include:
Eli Hawley, Clark County, first place in Parliamentary Procedures; and Yehor Rozum, Burlington, first place in Business Law and Ethics. Both students also earned additional top-five finishes and honorable mentions in events including Digital Marketing, Project Management, and Management, Marketing, and Human Resources.
The students will travel to Nashville, Tennessee, in May to compete at the BPA National Leadership Conference against two- and four-year colleges from across the nation.
BPA is a leading career and technical student organization for students pursuing careers in business management, office administration, information technology, and related fields.
