SCC’s truck training course includes a classroom or online learning component and a practical behind-the-wheel component.

 

Entry Level Driver Theory Training (ELDT)

Entry-Level Driver Training or ELDT Theory is a set of minimum standards for commercial driver education. It is a requirement enacted by the Federal Motor Carriers Association (FMCSA) that aims to standardize safety and training standards for professional truck drivers nationwide. 

ELDT is required for all new entry-level drivers or drivers who want to add an endorsement.  Students can complete this training via online or face-to-face formats.

Behind the Wheel (BTW) training is offered during the weekdays and weekends. Students have the opportunity to drive automatic or 10-speed manual transmission.

Class A CDL

Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Certificate program is a hands-on, competency-based training designed for those wanting to start a career as a truck driver. Holding a Class A license allows you to operate most tractor-trailers weighing over 26,001 pounds or towing over 10,000 pounds. It is the most common CDL option – especially if you want to be an over-the-road truck driver.

Class A training for new drivers can be completed in as quickly as four weeks. 

Class A Vehicles:

  • Tractor-trailers — typical semi, big rig, or 18-wheeler
  • Truck and trailer combinations — double and triple trailers
  • Tanker Vehicles
  • Flatbed Vehicles

Class B CDL

A Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Certificate program is designed for drivers who want to operate a single GVWR/GVW of 26,001 pounds or more. 

Most jobs that require Class B licenses include local, short-run jobs where drivers are home every day.

Class B training for new drivers can be completed in as quickly as one week.

Class B Vehicles:

  • Straight trucks
  • Large busses — city buses, school buses, and tour buses with additional endorsements.
  • Box trucks
  • Dump trucks with small trailers

Class B CDL with School Bus and Passenger Endorsement

A Class B CDL with School Bus and Passenger endorsements opens up various opportunities in transportation, especially in community and educational settings.

Any driver who wishes to drive a school bus with a capacity to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver, must have a CDL with both a school bus endorsement and a passenger endorsement. This program consists of a combination of classwork and behind-the-wheel training.

Refresher Course

Our refresher course is designed for drivers who already have a Class A or Class B CDL and want to get back into the trucking industry. Training includes refresher driving skills in backing, turning, shifting, and maneuvering a vehicle.

Endorsements

Endorsements open up various opportunities in transportation and ensure drivers have the necessary knowledge and skills to handle specific large vehicles safely.

Hazmat Endorsement Course

Purpose: Obtaining a Hazmat Driver Endorsement is essential for drivers transporting hazardous materials. It is required by law and failing to obtain the proper endorsement can result in penalties and legal action. Additionally, holding a Hazmat endorsement makes drivers more marketable to employers and can lead to higher salaries. Student must be 21 years old. 

Endorsement ensures drivers has the necessary knowledge and skills to handle these materials safely and respond appropriately in case of an emergency. Overall, obtaining a Hazmat Endorsement is a smart investment in both a driver’s career and safety.

Passenger Endorsement (P)

Purpose: This endorsement allows the driver to transport passengers in vehicles designed to carry 16 or more passengers, including the driver. School bus driver, shuttle bus operator, transit driver, or any position requiring transportation of passengers. You may get Passenger Endorsement with any of the following CDL license A, B, or C. This program includes a theory portion and a behind-the-wheel portion.

Endorsement ensures that the driver has the necessary knowledge and skills to handle a vehicle that that holds 16 passengers such as school bus driver, shuttle bus operator, transit driver, or any position requiring transportation of passengers.

School Bus Endorsement (S)

Purpose: This endorsement allows the driver to operate a school bus. Any driver who wishes to drive a school bus having a design capacity to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver, must have both a school bus endorsement as well as a passenger endorsement on their CDL.

Endorsement ensure driver have the necessary knowledge and skills to handle a school bus driver, shuttle bus operator, transit driver, or any position requiring transportation of passengers.
