SCC Press Release

Dan RingThe Inaugural Dan Ring Memorial Bike Ride will take place on September 26, 2009, at Southeastern Community College’s West Burlington campus. Funds raised from the event will support the Daniel Anders Ring Memorial Endowed Nursing Scholarship. The ride will follow the Burlington area bike route (approximately 15 miles). There will also be a 4-mile kids’ ride. The ride begins at 9:00 am with registration beginning at 7:30 am. Registration is $20. Pre-registrants will receive a free t-shirt.

Dan Ring was an instructor at SCC, teaching Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology for 16 years. Dan drew inspiration for mind and body through the wonders of nature. He was an avid bicyclist. He rode his bike out of concern for the environment and for personal fitness. He rode his bike every single day logging 5000, 6000, even 7000 miles every year. Dan was instrumental in creating the bicycle route through the Burlington area.

Dan passed away on November 24, 2008 at the age of 65 of a heart arrhythmia while riding his bike home from SCC.

The Daniel Anders Ring Memorial Endowed Nursing Scholarship is for first-year Nursing students enrolled in the second semester of the Summer Start or Evening & Weekend Nursing Programs. It is not intended for academic achievers with a history of success. It is for students who initially struggled and later “caught fire” some time during their first semester.

The ride will be preceded by a dedication of a new covered bicycle storage facility located on the North side of the West Burlington campus.

The event is sponsored by Southeastern Community College, SCC Student Board, Great River Medical Center, Bike Burlington, Bickel’s Cycle & Fitness, Standard of Beaverdale, the Hawk Eye, Burlington Pepsi, and Maid-Rite Restaurant.

Registration forms are available at all participating sponsors and on the SCC website. Completed registrations are due by September 7 to guarantee a t-shirt.
