SCC Press Release

20 1/4-cent Physical Plant Levy on the September 8, 2009 School Election Ballot

On the September 8, 2009 school election ballot, voters will be asked whether to continue the ten-year 20¼ cent physical plant levy passed in 2001 for Southeastern Community College. The 20 ¼ cent levy provides over $638,000 annually for physical plant expenses at all SCC campuses and centers. Physical plant expenses include general building maintenance and improvements such as parking lots and roof repair and replacement, electrical upgrades, heating and cooling needs, lighting projects, remodeling and new construction. The college spends most of its levy funds in southeast Iowa.

The current levy expires in 2012. To continue the levy through 2022, a 50% majority vote is required. All fifteen Iowa community colleges have this levy.

With rollbacks, the college’s physical plant levy costs the average owner of a $100,000 home in southeast Iowa an estimated $8.91 per year. The SCC 20¼ cent physical plant levy is currently included in property tax bills in the Iowa counties of Des Moines, Lee, Henry and the southern half of Louisa. Property owners in the extreme eastern edges of Jefferson, Washington and Van Buren counties are also impacted.
