Samuel Clemens Short Story Contest Returns

After a year’s hiatus, the 12th Samuel Clemens Short Story Writing Contest sponsored by Southeastern Community College is back. This contest for Midwestern authors is named after Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) who lived and worked in Keokuk early in his career. A panel of judges selected by the SCC English faculty will select the winning entries.

Contest guidelines are:

  • 2,000 words maximum, typed
  • fiction not previously published, any subject
  • each applicant may submit up to 2 stories
  • do not write your name on the story itself
  • $10.00 entry fee per story, (students currently enrolled at SCC in credit classes may enter at no charge)

Awards are $150 for first place, $75 for second, and $40 for third; the winning tales will be printed in the May 2010 edition of SCC’s literary magazine Chiaroscuro. Entries will not be returned. Entry deadline is November 30, 2009, with winners being announced around January 30, 2010.
