SCC Extends Scholarship Deadline for National Science Foundation Scholarships to April 19

Southeastern Community College has extended its deadline for the NSF STEM scholarship to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 19. SCC was awarded a $558,000 S-STEM grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in January 2010 to be used to fund student scholarships over the next five years. The scholarship will cover all college expenses for 10 eligible full-time students of any age who enter one of following target programs at Southeastern Community College this fall: Electronics Technology, Drafting Technology, Precision Machining, and Pre-Engineering. It is renewable for two years. Qualifying students must demonstrate a combination of financial need and academic achievement and submit two reference letters. Also to be eligible, applicants must have completed Algebra 1 or higher and one lab Science class by the time they enroll at SCC.

Project Director Dr. Chris Sedlack explains that one key component of the S-STEM scholarship program is a requirement for recipients to take a class that gives them tools to succeed in school and beyond. Each semester students will learn study skills, go on college and industry visits, and learn job search skills. “It’s well documented that students who study in a cohort group fare better than those who go it alone. By keeping them together over the course of two years, they will develop a kind of support structure, sort of like a team.” Sedlack says that the program will be ready for roll-out for the fall semester. “We’re targeting 10 students this first year, and then 13 for the next two years. Students can be graduating from high school or be of non-traditional age. ”

The application for the S-STEM scholarship has been extended to April 19, 2010. Applications are available from high school counselors in Merged Area 16 or from Julie Glasgow at the SCC Foundation (319) 208-5062 or jglasgow@scciowa.edu).
