Sam Clemens Short Story Writing Contest Opens Call for Entries

Call for entries has begun for the 14th Samuel Clemens Short Story Writing Contest sponsored by Southeastern Community College. This contest for Midwestern authors is named after Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) who lived and worked in Keokuk early in his career. A panel of judges selected by the SCC will determine the winning entries.

Contest guidelines are:

  • 2,000 words maximum, typed
  • fiction not previously published, any subject
  • do not write your name on the story itself (use a cover sheet).
  • each applicant may submit up to two stories

Cost is $15 per entry (students currently enrolled at SCC in credit classes may enter at no charge). Make checks payable to SCC.

Awards are $150 for first place, $75 for second, and $50 for third; the winning story will be printed in the May 2011 edition of SCC’s literary magazine Chiaroscuro. Entries will not be returned. Entry deadline is November 30, 2010, with winners being announced around January 30, 2011.
