SCC Music Hosts Monthly Live in Concert Series Tuesday, November 26
SCC's music program will host its monthly Live in Concert Series event Tuesday, November 26 at 7 pm on its West Burlington campus. Scheduled to perform are flutist Karen Weirather and pianist Leigh Pirtle, who will play a selection of well-known works for flute by composers ranging from the Baroque period all the way to the 21st century. SCC's Culture on Campus is funding the event.
Series coordinator and music instructor Daniel Pappas notes, "I want to bring high quality music performances to our campus for our students, the community, and my colleagues. I'm looking to feature both local musicians of note, including our faculty, as well as musical guests from other states and universities."
The event is open and free to the public. The concert will be held in the Little Theatre, Room 333, on SCC's West Burlington campus. Refreshments will be offered at the close of the event.
Pappas is pleased to host musicians who have walked the college's halls --- a demonstration to students that they can achieve their musical passions.
"Both Leigh and Karen are incredible musicians with a long history of exemplary musicianship, and we are lucky to have an opportunity to feature them. Karen is a current adjunct flute instructor and fearless leader of the SCC pep band, and Leigh is well-known both as a teacher at SCC (having recently retired from the college) and for her incredible piano playing."
Weirather is both Principal Flute of the Nauvoo Orchestra and Third Flute of the Quincy Symphony Orchestra. She has also served as Piccoloist with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra and Knox-Galesburg Symphony. Along with her work at SCC, she is a newly appointed flute instructor at Culver-Stockton College.
Pirtle coordinates the Music Ministry at First Congregational Church, serves as accompanist for Bel Canto Chorale, and is actively enjoying other musical opportunities along the way since retiring from SCC.
