SCC Showcases New Health and Science Labs with Open House

08/26/2019

Southeastern Community College will hold an open house for its renovated Health and Science Labs on Monday, September 9, at 4 p.m. The facilities are located on the Keokuk campus.

The event is free and open to the public.

The $800,000 makeover of Emeritus Hall and Bowles Hall includes updated science labs and patient simulation lab, and new classroom amenities. Attendees will also notice that Bowles Hall got a facelift of sorts. A service entrance was replaced with green space and parts of the exterior now feature a red metal cladding with a prominent SCC.

"Bowles Hall, which faces Messenger Road, used to house our maintenance and service areas," says Dr. Ash. "While it was a practical use of the space, it wasn't a good first impression for visitors or passers-by."

Demolition began in earnest one day after final exams in May.

"We were on a tight timeline and every minute counted," says Campus Director Kari Bevans. "The builders had three months to tear everything out and put it all back together before students returned this month. They did it, and we're excited for the improved resources that our faculty and students now have."

Part of SCC's Building the Dream campus expansion initiative, the renovation closes out over three years of new construction and upgrade projects across SCC's two campuses.

"We have some of the best faculty in the state who worked wonders with limited resources," Dr. Ash says. "Now with these new facilities and equipment, they'll have the tools to offer even better instruction. That adds up to a better learning experience for our students."
