WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa - Southeastern Community College (SCC) continues to open doors for those ready to step into their next chapter. SCC’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program is now officially recognized as an approved SkillBridge Industry Partner through IowaWORKS, paving the way for active-duty military members to gain valuable civilian training before transitioning out of service.
The Department of Defense SkillBridge initiative connects service members with hands-on career experiences in the final stretch of their military duty. SCC’s new approval brings its CDL Entry-Level Driver Theory course into this fold, offering a practical pathway into the transportation industry—one of the country’s most essential and resilient sectors.
“Our SkillBridge status does more than enhance our program’s credibility,” said Audra Gaddis, Project Manager with SCC’s Center for Business (CBIZ). “It’s about community impact. We’re helping service members gain confidence and skills that translate to strong, family-supporting careers. And we’re helping our local employers tap into a dependable, motivated talent pool. It’s a win for everyone involved.”
Participants in the CDL program receive structured support including job shadowing, internships, and help navigating the application process. Crucially, they maintain their military pay throughout, removing financial pressure and allowing them to focus on training.
Local employers are also seeing the value. Through SkillBridge, businesses can host CDL interns at no cost, evaluate potential hires, and give back to the veteran community—all without long-term commitment.
“This is about building bridges,” Gaddis added. “We’re proud to be part of a national solution that connects people who have served with real opportunities to thrive right here in our community.”
The approval came after collaboration with IowaWORKS and the Mississippi Valley Transportation Sector Board, where the program was met with strong interest from industry leaders. Tracie Timmerman, Local Veterans’ Employment Representative, played a key role in bringing this opportunity forward. Employers such as JBS and Valley Distribution quickly voiced support and interest in participating.
SCC and CBIZ remain committed to creating meaningful, community-driven programs that support veterans, grow local talent, and strengthen the regional economy.
